HUNTER COLLEGE WRITERS CONFERENCE

Preparing my little 'few' words for Saturday morning's panel appearance.  I'm in with the heavy hitters talking about marketing....something I've been ambivalent about until the past year.  Now I think: anyone who has written a book deserves to have people KNOW about it!  You spent months, even years shepherding your thoughts, your characters, your  plot into just the right words so the world should be able to appreciate it. GET IT OUT THERE!

SPEAKING OF WORDS WITH A FEW NUMBERS

Over 800 different languages are spoken in New York City. Immigrants fight for the 38,000 seats in adult education classes to learn English but the state has dropped the Regents exams to test English speaking 12th graders' proficiency in French, Spanish and Italian.  This will save the state $700,000. Students will still study languages to receive a 'Regent's diploma with advanced designation' but the state won't test them. I wonder who will? German, Hebrew and Latin were dropped last year. New York will save "roughly the cost of policing a homestand at one of the baseball stadiums."

TABLOID CITY by Pete Hamill

I read it yesterday ...richly detailed, very good writing. PH's alter ego sorting out the tangled world that is Manhattan. Get it, read it and revel in the neighborhoods and the characters of our beloved island.

a world with ONE book

"I couldn't live in a world without books."---Thomas Jefferson

Neither could I and we don't have to. But what if your world shrank to a desert island, you in rags, enough to eat, fresh water, a palm tree for shade, and one book.  Which one?

Ebooks: sales soar

"People with e-readers buy more books. That's an opportunity."--- Markus Dohle, Chairman and chief executive of Random House, at BookExpo America, an annual trade show,  held in New York.
